Introduction

Provides expert services in the management of acute and chronic respiratory disorders. We provide a wide range of services for different conditions, including but not limited to asthma, COPD, lung cancer, respiratory infections including tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, occupational lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease, sleep related breathing disorders, lung cancer, and chronic respiratory failure.

The hospital provides a seven bedded unit for respiratory patients and non – invasive ventilatory support for patients in respiratory failure.

St Michael’s Hospital provides an outpatient service for acute and chronic respiratory patient. The respiratory nurse specialists provide clinical expertise for respiratory patients. The care they provide is evidence – based on research therefore providing the patient with the most up to date knowledge and treatments. The respiratory nurse specialists have a very patient orientated approach to their service.

The aim of the respiratory specialist nurses is to provide a clear framework of care for respiratory patients for both in patients and outpatients in St Michael’s Hospital. This requires clinical management and supervision of in patient care. Acting as a resource person for advice support and promoting health management through education. Taking all steps possible to safeguard the welfare and safety of patients.

Location

The Respiratory Unit is on the second floor. Follow the stairs past the Day Ward. The Pulmonary Laboratory is on the first floor Annexe, beside the Conservatory

Pulmonary Laboratory Tuesday & Friday 8.00am – 4.00pm
Respiratory Nurses Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday 8.00am – 6.00pm
Thursday 8.00am – 4.30pm
Friday 8.00am – 5.00pm
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Monday – Friday 9.15am – 4.30pm

  • Acting as a resource for multidisciplinary team members

  • Nurse Led Clinic for Asthma COPD patients
  • Arrange instalment of domiciliary equipment e.g. nebulisers, oxygen, non-invasive-ventilation (NIV), CPAP
  • Home oximetry service
  • Assessment for oxygen therapy for home use and for travel purposes
  • Smoking cessation programmes
  • Involved in research/audit in respiratory care
