Physiotherapy Department
Introduction
Physiotherapy is a health profession concerned with helping to restore well- being to people following injury, pain or disability. Using knowledge from our extensive scientific background of human anatomy and physiology, Chartered Physiotherapists can help to :
- Assess, diagnose and treat conditions and illnesses that affect people in all ages and social groups.
- Assist a patient to prevent injury in the workplace or on the sports field.
- Promote healthier life styles for all.
Chartered Physiotherapists use mainly physical means such as exercise, manipulation, mobilisation, and massage together with relaxation and visualisation, electrical modalities such as Laser Therapy and Ultrasound to help patients achieve their full potential.

The Physiotherapy Department is located on the Ground Floor facing the Out Patients Department of St. Michael’s Hospital
There is an out of hours emergency service available for in–patients 16:30–8:30
There are 10 Physiotherapists working in St. Michael’s Hospital providing physiotherapy care to outpatients, inpatients, and GP referred patients. We in St. Michael’s Physiotherapy department are dedicated to:
- Helping people achieve their full potential following injury, pain or disability.
- Providing a health service that is accessible, effective, and humanitarian.
- Continuing to undertake training and audits to improve our service.
- Providing a service that is based on high standards of care and practice.
Physiotherapists work in a variety of settings such as in Orthopaedic Medicine, Care of the elderly, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Cardiac –Rehabilitation for persons over 65 years, GP direct access service, Manual handling training and in women and men’s healthcare issues.
Patients are referred to the physiotherapy department from the hospital out- patient and in-patient clinics, and from GP practices in the Dunlaoire area.
